We all know about the plastic crisis affecting our oceans on a global scale, but given the majority of us don’t see it first hand, it’s sadly a case of out-of-sight-out-of-mind.

For 50 years plastic has become an integral part of our existence, and at first, it all looked rosey. Wow, look at this incredible material that lasts indefinitely, how useful is that!?

Well at first yes, but the coffee cup lids, water bottles, plastic bags, food wrappers and containers, and any number of everyday things we use in our lives which we then immediately throw away, have to end up somewhere. Beyond the billions of square meters of landfill across the globe which is filled up each year with plastic, the oceans have taken the huge brunt of our consumer economy and lifestyle choices.

Almost every single piece of plastic that has ever been made still exists today, and more than 5 TRILLION of those are already in the oceans. By 2050 there will be more plastic in the sea than fish, by weight, according to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

Around 8 million tons of plastic end up in the oceans each year, a statistic which is rising dramatically. One shocking statistic is that America alone uses 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour! But we can’t be complacent and think that we are not contributing hugely to the overall figure if we hail from smaller nations such as the UK. Passive concern for causes like this is simply not good enough, when the results will directly affect our descendants, friends, and ourselves, and have already killed billions of animals on both land and sea the world over.

There are many great organisation out there affecting positive change, but they ultimately will rely on our conscious decisions as consumers to change the destructive profit driven ways of the large corporations.

One such organisation is The Pearly White Club, “The UK’s first environmentally friendly toothbrush subscription service, helping to look after the planet while looking after your Pearly Whites…”

From just £2.50 a month you can start a subscription to receive their bamboo toothbrushes once every six weeks for you and your family, choosing the brush which best suits you. As your dentist will tell you, brushing your teeth with a brush that’s past it can do more harm than good, and once the plastic brushes are thrown away, they will outlive you and your great, great, great x100 grandchildren!

At Portobello Tents we are working on a few very exciting plastic pledges which we will be sharing with our followers along the way. We have been aligning ourselves with suppliers and organisations who are all making conscious and sustainable efforts to cut single use plastic once and for all. The Pearly White Club is one of those companies, and we are very excited to be working alongside them towards a greener future.

So how does our relationship work? Simple. If you book one of our Gold or V.I.P tents this summer at any of the festivals or events we are going to, you’ll get a complementary bamboo toothbrush in our toiletry hamper! They will also be available in our shop.

But beyond the fields and festivals where you’ll find Portobello Tents, you should get a subscription with The Pearly White Club, never shop for a toothbrush again, and make a start at changing your consumer habits to help save our planet. However small you think they may be, as a collective it will make a difference!

As if the all the above wasn’t a good enough reason to visit their website and sign up, alongside their efforts to reduce plastic use, they are a proud supporters of local homelessness prevention charity – New Hope.

New Hope exists to serve individuals who are homeless or vulnerably- housed through the provision of accommodation and opportunities to transform lives.

For every toothbrush subscription, The Pearly White Club will donate one of our environmentally friendly toothbrushes to their shelter.
