THE SUMMER HOUSE WEEKEND
Dates: 13th - 17th August 2020
Location: Secret Location, UK
This intimate gathering is a festival anomaly, in many ways; it remains small at around 250 people, though it retains some of the festival essentials; great music, good company and plenty of entertainment. With an emphasis on self-expression, a communal spirit and exploring and discussing new ideas, the creators of this event offer you the ultimate weekend house party.
The Summer House Weekend was originally established as a birthday party for its architect, Tobias Fauntleroy Slater, and a few of his friends, in 2012. The following year, through huge amounts of promotion and a crowd-funding initiative, the first official Summer House Weekend took place. They wanted to create an event where one could get away from the real world for a little bit; to go to a beautiful location with a great group of people and lots of entertainment to keep them stimulated. It has since become very popular, though in order to keep it personal, they do limit ticket sales so as to keep numbers down.
Using a ‘PAL’ system, everyone vouches for one particular friend and vice versa; so you can be sure that all guests will be a friend of a friend – ensuring that their ethos of making new friends, at the same time as partying with old, is reached. They are all of a similar mindset and are willing to join in in all the activities – to “learn together, dine together and play together […] a place to make meaningful and lasting connections.”
It would be fair, perhaps, to say that music is not the main draw of this event, though they do extend brilliant DJs and an array of other fun and interesting options to keep people amused throughout. Workshops, talks, treatments, frolicking in the lake, games in the garden; and then in the evening, your ideal house party; performances, dance, music, storytelling and long discussions by the fire. To sum it up: “a retreat exploring playfulness and performance, connection and community, intimacy, sensuality and self-expression.”
As may be expected, this is not a family-friendly affair – tickets are sold only to adults over the age of 18. They have a strict code of conduct to which everyone must adhere to ensure all feel comfortable and secure the whole weekend through. Food-wise, breakfast and dinner options are available in the main house – one can purchase a meal plan ahead of time – encouraging guests towards community dining. All meals are carefully catered by brilliant chefs. Otherwise, there are a couple of street food vendors and guests can also bring their own food if they prefer. Beverages of every nature are also provided all the way through.
The location changes, and is kept secret until two weeks before the party. Even then it is only announced to ticket-holders. However guests can be sure that it will be in a beautiful country house with swimming facilities and spacious grounds.
This is an ideal opportunity to do some glamping too; if you’ve always wanted to experience sleeping under the stars in the glorious English countryside – now’s your chance. The Summer House Weekend luxury camping involves the best of both worlds; being surrounded by nature and enjoying all the mod cons – hot showers, delightfully soft bedding, plenty of space and privacy and some very stylish bell tents.
