Dates: 21st - 23rd February 2020
Location: Tapapakanga Regional Park, New Zealand
There is a beach on the other side of the world, in Tapapakanga National Park, where you will find a collection of euphoric, like-minded individuals celebrating “liberation and libation; idealism and interactivity” in a community-first fashion. The land is the ancestral home of the tangata whenua, Ngāti Whanaunga and Ngāti Paoa, and as such, is venerated ground with spiritual relevance and some areas are respectfully cordoned off. This is Splore Festival, which has been described by some as a truly life-changing event – having spent three days in this positive world-bubble, they are reinvigorated with a fresh enthusiasm for life, and optimism about themselves.
“Anything goes; Pohutukawa trees are shrines wrapped in multicoloured strands of wool, cinemas are powered by bicycles, a tin hut becomes a steam-punk time machine. While name-acts may rock the main stage massive, across the beach burlesque nymphs dangle from trapezes in a marquee full of midnight revelers dressed like castaways on the island of love.”
They feature all sorts of music; both renowned artists as well as lesser known ones whose music is especially deserving of an audience. They have a special team who spend a year in advance singling out new performers to share with the Splore community. The music goes on all day and all night by the turquoise waters of the South Pacific – so when you’re not hitting the dancefloor, you can go for a float in the sea with a delicious cocktail in hand. Saturday night is usually the biggest – and fancy dress is considered essential – the bigger the better.
The entertainment at Splore Festival is truly magnificent; aside from the music, attendees can enjoy theatre performances, spoken word workshops and shows – not to mention the odd flash mob. To them, it’s not just about watching, it’s about participating too. There is also an entire arts trail, which salutes creativity in installations, performance arts and more – keeping you visually stimulated and your mind engaged.
Kids, too are welcome. They have their own dedicated area to make sure that there’s something for the whole family. Plus, if you’ve been feeling a little fatigued (from festivalling or just from life), there is also a wonderful wellness area which will carefully nourish both your body and your spirit. Food, too – masses of delicious food. A great variety of vendors offering affordable culinary treats, as well as, of course, a well stocked selection of beverages.
All in all, it’s a marvellously happy collection of pleasures – for the ear, the heart, the feet, the belly and, your mind. There are multiple camping grounds spread out over the venue, each tailored to suit different needs, whether that be family, VIP or specially themed because as they say, camping can be an art, too. Glamping at Splore Festival is, mercifully, an option – because we all know you ain’t doing it right if you ain’t doing it in style.
