Dates: The last was 2018
Location: Portmeirion, Wales
This event was created with the intention of producing ‘the perfect festival’. Bearing that in mind, its architects have fashioned an affair of epic proportions – with every aspect carefully considered, it attracts a wonderfully diverse group of people for a spectacularly individual offering. Set in the truly unique town of Portmeirion in Wales, you couldn’t ask for a more inspired or inspiring base for revelry.
Feeling that the festival scene had become ‘stale’, the creators behind No 6 Festival aimed for a more bespoke and refined affair, and absolutely achieved it.
Unlike many other more ‘organically’ formed festivals, a huge amount of thought and care went into the decisions behind its inception, in 2012, from its location to composition, to aesthetics and atmosphere. The inimitable town of Portmeirion on the Snowdonia coast in Wales offered “nature and eccentricity in equal measures […] where you can lose yourself in your own fairytale”.
Their determination to triumph does not recede on the musical front either. Endeavoring to provide a mixture of well-recognized favourites with exciting new talent, within the many available genres, their line-ups have won awards and keep the magic going. Each category has its own setting that enhances the ambiance – whether you’re listening to sea shanties by the estuary or getting lost in the woods to some live acoustic guitar, appreciating a string ensemble at the Town Hall or going wild to fantastic DJs in Studio No 6, you’re going to be fully ensconced in each enchanted bubble.
The dedication stretches beyond music too, to literature, poetry, comedy, art and filmmaking. Incredible talks and workshops, stand up shows and addresses on everything. You might choose to go paddle boarding or fling yourself into fancy dress carnival, relax at the mermaid spa or create your own lantern for an illuminated parade. There are simply too many options to list here – but they are all extraordinary. And this goes for the whole family – there are an absurd number of fun options for the children too. Ukulele lessons, pirate training, den building and all sorts of arts and crafts. Kids under 10 go free too.
Food plays another important role in the festival – with a higher standard achieved than you might expect to find elsewhere. Banquets and proper pulled pork sandwiches, oysters and champagne, delicious street food vendors from all over the place – there’s something of everything, including fresh, local, organic produce.
The history and architecture of Portmeirion town itself are quite special. Incorporating touches of an Italian coastal town with dramatic mountains, forests and the sea, it is a surreal, serene and exquisite space. The festival spreads itself throughout the entire village – so there is no end of different venues for every event to be hosted. The holistic attitude of the entire village to the festival means that each experience is woven together down a dream-like, fantasy avenue.
